Understandably, real businesses don’t want to be linked to supernatural mayhem, so I’ve created some fictional stand-ins. While quite a bit of the Charleston in Deadly Curiositiesreally exists, I have added fictional businesses and locations just because it’s easier that way and sidesteps some hassles. So you’ve got to give people a reason to believe that magic and supernatural things are real in your book, and you’ve got to get the details right about the city. With urban fantasy, one of the challenges is that you’re writing in the modern-day, in an existing city where real people actually live. So while I love epic fantasy, and will continue to write new epic fantasy novels and short stories, it was time to add something new to the mix. What were the challenges of writing something completely different?Īs a writer, it’s always fun to switch things up a bit to avoid getting stale or burned out. I’m so happy to have Gail joining me today to talk about her new book and other tidbits about her life, so sit back, enjoy, and help me welcome Gail to the blog…ĭeadly Curiosities is your first foray into urban fantasy, after writing very successfully in the epic fantasy genre. Like the names Marx and Engels, or Malcolm X and Alex Haley-the Black journalist who wrote Malcolm’s autobiography, and whose name is on the cover of Malcolm’s book-Fanon and Sartre have been linked in the pages of revolutionary history and legend for the last six decades. Published 60 years ago in 1961 The Wretched of the Earth was one of the seminal works of the Sixties, in part because it came with an introduction by the French philosopher, novelist and Third World defender Jean-Paul Sartre. We will be free, by any means necessary.” That was the cry I heard everywhere, “By any means necessary.” That meant violence if need be. We will use that violence to rid ourselves of oppression if necessary. Americans taught the black people to be violent. He elaborated, “Violence is a part of America’s culture. Near the peak of the Black Power movement, Brown Americanized Fanon and gave him an African-American inflection. Fanon laid the groundwork for Rap in his 1961 book, The Wretched of the Earth, which inspired members of SNCC, plus Black Panthers, Weathermen and more. He was in a hurry and cities were burning. Rap Brown didn’t credit Frantz Fanon in his famed 1967 speech on violence, though he might have. Photograph Source: Tony Webster – CC BY 2.0 Grayling may find a particular philosopher less than satisfactory, but he never fails to point out what is worth considering in each person’s work. Boethius has his turn, as does William of Ockham, and later, Spinoza, Locke, and Hume. While the book is long - 600 pages, not including notes - philosophy itself is even longer, so the thinkers speed by. Grayling makes pre-Socratic philosophers such as Anaximander, Parmenides, and Anaxagoras feel unexpectedly relevant, and he concisely covers the Greek trinity of Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle, each of whom receives his own chapter. Grayling is in his new book, The History of Philosophy. It’s surprisingly fun to immerse oneself in the tradition of Western philosophy, especially when the guide proves to be as thoughtful and clear-sighted as Oxford professor A. It will take patience, focus-and yes, love-to dedicate a lifetime learning more about this little-understood creature. It will take practice and experience to lay humane leghold snares, collect scat samples, and set up motion-triggered cameras. It will take endurance and persistence to climb the dusty mountain trails, hope of a snow leopard sighting rising and falling with each new summit. And it doesn't stop Sy Montgomery and Nic Bishop from packing their bags in order to join Tom on a trek to Mongolia, where they hope to learn more about this magical cat, a cat who doesn't give up its secrets easily. But that doesn't deter scientist Tom McCarthy, Conservation Director of the Seattle-based Snow Leopard Trust, or his many colleagues from dedicating their lives' work to the study and protection of this seldom-seen creature. Slinking along the Mongolian mountain ridges, the snow leopards are invisible-and almost impossible to study. A thick, long tail for balance helps snow leopards spring at their prey from great distances-prey that is often three times its own size. Beautiful spotted coats conceal these elusive cats in their rocky, high-altitude habitat-a place where temperatures are often cold enough to freeze human tears. People call it "The Ghost of the Mountain," for those who live among snow leopards almost never see one. I liked my job, but I was on the road 40 hours out of the week, and I didn't get to see a lot of my family. I worked my way up the ranks of the company until I was director of sales for one of our mobility partners. I worked for a company that did outsourced sales for various telecommunication, energy, and office supply retailers. My first job out of school was in accounting. I've always like math, sales, and money, so I switched my major to Finance and then got an MBA a few years after I got my undergrad. A year or so in, and I decided that I didn't want to be a pro musician. I played oboe/saxophone in high school, and went to college for performance arts. When I got into high school, I found a bunch of other gamer friends and we played all sorts of Dungeon & Dragons, Heroes Unlimited, Ninjas & Super Spies, Rifts, Legend of the Five Rings, Deadlands, and of course- Shadowrun 2nd edition (which is my favorite tabletop role playing game). I was just a kid at the time, and didn't have a lot of friends, but I still spent countless hours making characters and thinking about cool adventures to take them on. I started writing stories back in the late 80's, when I was introduced to the classic Palladium game Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Other Strangeness. OH, hello there, thanks for stopping by, and thank you for reading my novels, joining my mailing list, and sharing my books with your friends! |
